Keeping Your Hydrangeas Blooming: Deadheading and Pruning
Hydrangeas are popular shrubs known for their vibrant flower clusters. To maintain their beauty and encourage continued blooming, two key techniques are employed: deadheading and pruning.
Deadheading involves removing spent blooms after they begin to fade or turn brown. This encourages the plant to direct its energy towards producing new flowers instead of setting seed. Here’s how to deadhead your hydrangeas:
Identify the spent blooms: Look for flowers that have lost their vibrant color and are starting to wilt or turn brown.
Locate the cut point: Follow the stem of the spent bloom down to the first pair of healthy, full-sized leaves.
Make the cut: Using sharp, clean pruning shears, cut the stem just above the leaves at a diagonal angle. This promotes healthy new growth.
Pruning involves removing specific branches to control the size and shape of the hydrangea, as well as to encourage new growth and flower production. The timing and method of pruning differ depending on the type of hydrangea you have. Here’s a general guideline:
Bigleaf hydrangeas (mopheads and lacecaps): These hydrangeas bloom on old wood (stems grown the previous year). Prune minimally in late winter or early spring, removing only dead, diseased, or crossing branches. Avoid cutting back live stems as it can reduce flowering.
Panicle hydrangeas (including Limelight and Bobo): These hydrangeas bloom on new wood (current year’s growth). Prune them in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. Cut back stems to a pair of healthy buds to promote bushier growth and larger flower heads.
Remember, always use sharp, clean pruning shears to avoid damaging the plant and disinfect them between cuts to prevent the spread of disease. With proper deadheading and pruning, you can keep your hydrangeas flourishing and producing beautiful blooms throughout the season.
